Organic Skin Care for Aging Skin: Avoid these Ingredients

by Aileen Fitzharris

Depending on who you're talking to, the word organic can mean different things. In the food industry, it refers to products that do not contain pesticides or growth hormones. However, to someone in the skin care industry, it means products that do not contain artificial ingredients, petroleum-based ingredients, or other unsafe ingredients. Nevertheless, some skin care products are marketed as natural even if they contain petroleum and other noxious ingredients. After all, petroleum is not a synthetically produced product. So how can you protect yourself from mislabeled products? Simply make it a habit to read the labels before purchasing the product.

Anti Aging Ingredients to Avoid

The reason anti aging products exist is to help fight the aging process, however, there are a few ingredients that can actually speed up the aging process and lead to wrinkles, dull skin and other skin problems. Make sure to check the labels before you purchase any organic skin care product.

*Synthetic Colors

Synthetic colors contain heavy metal salts derived from coal tar. These components have proven to cause free radicals and quickly lead to eye wrinkles and dull skin. If you want an effective anti wrinkle cream that can help you prevent these problems, make sure that the products you use don't contain FD&C or D&C colors.

*Petrochemicals

This group of ingredients is derived from crude oil. Petrochemicals coat your skin and make it impossible for your body to eliminate toxins. This obstruction can lead to dull skin, and cause allergies and clogged pores.

Stay away from anti aging creams that contain mineral oil, paraffin and petrolatum. Especially if you have oily or combination skin.

*Sulfates

Sulfates are usually found in soaps, detergents and cleansers. If the product you are about to buy contains sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, then it contains sulfates. Sulfates dry out the skin and cause rashes, and in some cases have been known to cause ocular problems.

*Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats)

These components are used in conditioning products. However, they have been linked with antibiotic resistance. Avoid products that contain benzalkonium chloride, cetrimonium chloride and cetrimonium bromide, among others.

*Alcohol

Alcohol is a big no-no for any wrinkle treatment because it dehydrates the skin and promotes the development of wrinkles. Stearyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol are the only two alcohol ingredients that your skin care product should contain.

These are only a few of the ingredients you should avoid if you want to get a safe product. By doing a bit more research, you can find the best wrinkle creams out there.

However, time isn't always something you can spare, so in that case we've done some of the research for you.
